F. Chulkaturin, now a dying man, decides to fill up the remainder of his life by writing a memoir about the series of humiliations that finally convinced him that he is an "extraneous bolt in the machinery of eternity". He begins by describing how he met his Dulcinea, Liza Kirillova, the form and progress of their courtship, and how their romance met with "a sudden sharp bump".
